In this article, I tell you what that sensor still does well after ten years, where the camera body shows its age in an annoying way, what we check before putting one in the showcase, and when it makes more sense to look elsewhere. What 42 megapixels on a 2015 sensor really means
A RAW file from the A7R II measures 7952x5304 pixels and weighs between 42 and 82 MB, depending on whether you choose lossy compression or uncompressed. In 2015, this was the densest sensor ever mounted on a full frame, and ten years later it remains more resolving than what you find on most new mirrorless cameras under 2,000 euros. Resolution does not age: a pixel from 2015 and one from 2025 capture the same amount of detail.
7952x5304 pixels: when you need them and when you don't
The right question is not "how many megapixels," but "what do you do with them." Here are the cases where 42.4 MP concretely change the result:
- Fine art printing up to 60x40 cm at 300 dpi without any interpolation. With a 24 MP camera at those dimensions, you drop to 250 effective dpi.
- Crop that eliminates half of the frame area: you are left with about 21 usable MP, meaning a file that is still full. Pushing up to a 1.5x crop keeps you above 18 MP, which is why many use a 70-200 as if it were a 300 mm.
- Corrections and recompositions in architecture, where fixing a falling line eats up 10-15% of the frame.

The BSI advantage: why it's not just another high-resolution sensor

Dynamic range: approx. 13.9 stops measured at ISO 100
The interesting data point is what you do with it. In backlit landscapes, you can recover 2-3 stops of shadows in RAW development while keeping noise under control and avoiding obvious color shifts. Beyond 3 stops, chromatic noise in deep shadows becomes visible, and the color starts to shift towards magenta.
The same applies indoors: expose for the window, then brighten the room. This is the headroom that saves you from bracketing in 90% of situations.

The real limitations of the A7R II, the ones you discover on the third day of use
On the first day, you check the files at 100% and think you've made the deal of a lifetime. By the third day, you're out in the field with three batteries in your pocket, you've missed a burst because the buffer was full, and you're cursing the Sony menu. None of these issues have anything to do with image quality. They're about everything else.
NP-FW50 Battery: 290-340 certified shutter count, lower in winter
The NP-FW50 is the same battery found in Sony's entry-level APS-C models, yet it is mounted in a full-frame body that must power a 42-megapixel sensor and a 5-axis stabilizer. The CIPA rating states 290-340 shutter counts per charge, but the actual number depends on how long you keep the electronic viewfinder on. On a real shooting day, with the camera powered on intermittently for hours, it drops below 250.
The practical accounting is as follows:
- Tourist or street use: 2 batteries are enough for a normal day.
- Wedding, event, reportage: you need 4 batteries, not 3. The fourth pack is what prevents you from rationing your shutter count in the last hour.
- Winter below 5 degrees: expect a 25-30% drop in performance. Spare batteries should be kept in an inner pocket, not in the backpack.
Original Sony batteries cost around 55-70 euros, while decent third-party ones are in the 15-20 euro range. The A7R II charges via micro-USB, so a 10,000 mAh power bank can help on the go, but internal charging occupies the camera: it is not a solution, just a stopgap.
Buffer and writing: 5 fps that last a short time
The declared burst rate is 5 fps, but the number that matters is another: approximately 23 compressed RAW files before the buffer saturates. That's less than five seconds of continuous burst. After that, the camera slows down to a pace dictated by the write speed to the card.
The bottleneck is the single UHS-I SD slot. There is no UHS-II on this camera body, so buying a 300 MB/s card changes nothing: the limit is the camera's controller, not the card. In uncompressed RAW, the buffer fills up even sooner, around 8-9 frames.

Internal 4K and overheating
The A7R II records internal 4K in two modes: full frame, which reads the entire sensor surface with line skipping, and Super35, which samples from a denser portion and delivers a visibly sharper file. Super35 is the mode to use when quality matters, full frame when you need the wide angle.
The issue is thermal. In a hot environment — a lit studio, a summer outdoor setting — the camera stops after 20-25 minutes of continuous recording. This is not a defect of used units, it is the design: compact body, heating sensor, limited dissipation. Opening the tilting screen helps for a few minutes, disabling stabilization as well, but the limit remains.

Ergonomics and interface: no joystick, no touch
Ten years make a difference here. There is no joystick to move the focus point: you use the four-way control pad, and it takes about a dozen presses to move from one corner of the frame to the other. The screen is not touch-enabled, so there is no shortcut for tapping the subject.
The menu is the one from the older Sony generation, prior to the reorganization introduced with the III series: items scattered across dozens of pages without an evident logic. It can be learned, but it takes weeks, and muscle memory does not transfer from recent cameras. On a stationary or nearly stationary subject, the success rate is high: studio portrait, environmental portrait, still life with a person. Canon EF lenses with adapter: it works, but with compromises
If you are coming from Canon with an EF lens collection, you can adapt it using Metabones or Sigma MC-11. In single AF, the combination is usable: precise focus, acceptable shutter speeds, no drama. In continuous AF, reliability drops significantly, with strong differences from lens to lens — Sigma Art lenses via MC-11 perform better than older generation Canon L lenses.

Shutter count: The shutter is rated for 500,000 cycles
Sony rates the shutter of the A7R II for 500,000 cycles. A unit with 60,000 shutter count still has 88% of its useful life ahead, so the count weighs much less than on a DSLR with a 150,000-cycle shutter. That said, the number still needs to be read: not as an indicator of residual mechanical wear, but as a clue to how much the camera has worked and in what context. A body with 90,000 shutter count has almost certainly shot weddings or events, along with the dust and impacts that come with them.
The three specific checks for the A7R II
- Hot pixels on long exposures. Take a 30-second shot with the lens cap on, ISO 1600, noise reduction disabled. A few isolated pixels are physiological and can be mapped via software; a widespread pattern of colored dots is not.
- Mount play. A weak point of the early A7 models, improved on the II but not resolved. Mount a heavy lens and try to flex it: minimal elasticity is normal, but perceptible movement with a click is not.
- Grip rubber peeling. Tends to peel off on the thumb side due to sweat and time. It is not a functional issue, but it is a concrete negotiation lever: the replacement costs about 40 euros installed.

The Canon EOS RP starts at 550 euros and we have 6 units in stock. It weighs 485 grams compared to the 625 grams of the A7R II: on a day of hiking, the difference is truly noticeable. The Dual Pixel autofocus covers 88% of the frame and locks onto eyes with a naturalness that the 2015 Sony lacks.
It lacks stabilization, and the 26-megapixel files hold up less well under heavy post-processing recovery. For those who shoot people, travel light, and don't print larger than 50x70, it is often the most sensible choice of the three. It also costs 200-250 euros less, which is a lens.
Canon EOS R: 30 megapixels and a 3.69-million-dot viewfinder
The Canon EOS R is priced between 680 and 800 euros, placing it in direct competition with the A7R II. The 3.69-million-dot viewfinder is significantly superior to the Sony's 2.36 million: you will notice the difference immediately when composing in difficult lighting. Ergonomics and the battery life of the LP-E6N also favor Canon.
In return, you lose 12 megapixels and don't get IBIS. If your work doesn't require aggressive cropping or large prints, the EOS R is the most pleasant camera to use on a daily basis.
Sony A7 III: when it's worth waiting and saving an extra 300 euros
If your usage is mixed or dynamic, the A7 III is the most balanced of the four. Next-generation autofocus, NP-FZ100 battery that doubles the runtime, and a usable 10 frames per second. It goes for around €1,100–1,200 used.
For many photographers, it is the right choice, even if it costs more. The A7R II only makes sense if you truly need the 42 megapixels: for landscape, still life, reproduction, or heavy cropping. If you buy resolution you do not use, you have spent your money poorly.
What about used full-frame DSLRs?
If size is not a constraint, in the same price range you can find full-frame DSLRs with a battery life of 900 shutter counts and a massive used lens park. The real cost: 42 megapixels demand top-tier optics

The cost nobody budgets for comes later, when you mount what you already have in your bag in front of the sensor and discover that the files weigh twice as much without showing any extra detail. A 42.4-megapixel sensor does not add sharpness: it surgically reveals everything your lens and technique fail to deliver.
What happens with a €300 zoom kit
At the center of the frame, at f/8, almost all budget zooms perform decently. The problem lies in the corners and wide apertures: there, the lens's resolving power drops below what the sensor could actually record, turning the 7952x5304 pixel file into a half-empty container. You end up with 82 MB of data that, when printed at 40x60 cm, doesn't beat a 24-megapixel file taken with an honest prime. You pay in disk space and processing time for resolution you're not using.
The bare minimum to get started
A fast prime lens solves the problem at its root, and you don't need to spend a fortune:
- Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 — around 200 euros used. Slow and noisy autofocus, but the glass keeps up with the sensor.
- Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 FE — 250-300 euros. Lightweight, faster AF than the Sony, excellent value for money.
- Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA — 500-600 euros used. It is the reference: resolves over 42 megapixels wide open.
Realistic budget: €200-600. Below this threshold, the A7R II operates at 60% of its potential.
Micromosso: with 42 megapixels, you see everything
The rule of thumb of using the reciprocal of the focal length is not enough here. With a 50mm lens, you need to stay at 1/125 or 1/160, not 1/50, because a vibration that remains below the visibility threshold on a 24-megapixel sensor occupies two or three pixels here and is visible at 100%.
The 5-axis IBIS is rated at 4.5 stops CIPA. One stop means halving the shutter speed for the same result: from 1/125 to 1/60, from 1/60 to 1/30. Four and a half stops would theoretically mean dropping from 1/125 to around 1/6. In practice, with files of this density, you recover 2.5-3 stops: you get to 1/15-1/30 with an acceptable percentage of good shots. It’s not bad, but it’s not what the spec sheet claims.

The compression is lossy, but the differences only emerge in extreme highlight recoveries. For 95% of the work, it's perfectly fine, and it halves your archive size and import times. If your computer is more than six years old and has 8 GB of RAM, factor that in: post-production on files of this size becomes the real bottleneck, more so than the camera.
Who the A7R II is for and who it isn't
The A7R II is not a general-purpose camera. It is a specialized tool that, in a specific field, still outperforms camera bodies costing 2,000 euros, while in other areas it causes you to lose shutter counts that a 500-euro camera delivers. Knowing where you stand saves you 800 euros spent in vain.
It makes sense if you shoot landscape, still life, architecture, or reproduction
All these genres share three conditions: the subject is stationary, you have a tripod, and you have time to work the file in post. In this scenario, the 42.4 megapixels of the BSI sensor are not a brochure number; they are real operational headroom.
- Landscape: print in large format without interpolation and recover shadows using the BSI's dynamic range.
- Still life and product: the client requests vertical, square, and macro crops from the same file. With 7952x5304 pixels, you can extract all of them.
- Architecture: correct verticals in post-processing and still remain above 30 useful megapixels.
- Art reproduction and archives: here, resolution is a requirement, not a luxury. An A7R II at 800 euros does the same job as a scanner costing several thousand.
In all these cases, poor battery life is not an issue: you work on a tripod, often with USB power or spare batteries within reach.
It makes no sense if you do events, sports, reportage, or long videos
Here, the limitations compound rather than offset each other. Continuous autofocus loses subjects during rapid approach, the buffer fills up quickly because each RAW file weighs around 80 MB, and the NP-FW50 forces you to carry three or four batteries for a wedding day. The 4K video enters thermal protection after twenty minutes: it is unusable for a ceremony or a long interview.
If this is your line of work, a used A7 III is better, or stick with modern APS-C. A Sony a6500 we have at 600 euros features 5-axis in-body stabilization and a much deeper buffer (over 100 RAW in burst). The battery is the same NP-FW50, but with lower power consumption: approximately 350 CIPA shutter count on screen versus 340 for the A7R II, so two packs cover a day instead of four. The edge case: first full frame for those coming from APS-C
This is the most delicate situation. The sensor upgrade is real, but the camera body is only the first item on the bill. APS-C lenses mounted on FF leave you with 18 megapixels in crop mode, so the lens kit needs to be redone.

It goes through the technical bench, where the first data point we pull is the actual shutter count, not the one declared by the person who brought it in. Certified shutter count and shutter verification
We read the shutter count from the EXIF metadata of a certified shutter count taken in our lab, not from the camera's menu — on Sony models of this generation, the data is not exposed in the interface. That number is included in the product sheet and remains there even after the sale.

IBIS test, mount and battery condition
- Stabilizer: a burst of 10 shutter count with a 50mm at 1/15 second. If at least 7 are sharp at 100%, the 5 axes are working. If only 2 are sharp, the IBIS unit has an issue and the camera body is not for sale.
- E Mount: a heavy lens is mounted and lateral play is checked. On a body that has carried 1 kg zooms for ten years, the flange can drop by a few tenths of a millimeter, distorting focus at the edges.
- NP-FW50 Batteries: we measure the residual capacity of every included cell. Below 80% of nominal, the battery does not ship with the camera body; we replace it. Given this body's already short battery life, a tired battery turns a flaw into a serious problem.
2-year warranty on all used items
On a ten-year-old camera, the warranty matters more than on a 2023 model, for a simple reason: consumer electronics suffer from bathtub-curve failures, concentrated at the beginning and end of their lifespan. The A7R II is in the second phase.
