In the used market, an original NP-FW50 costs 40-50 euros, while decent brand compatibles cost 15-20. The practical calculation is simple: two backup batteries in the bag and a day of shooting is covered. How to check a used A7 or A7 II before buying it
A first-generation A7 from 2013 is now thirteen years old. That is not a problem in itself: these are magnesium alloy camera bodies, well-built, and we see plenty of them in perfect working order. The point is that at this age, condition matters more than the model, and two units of the same body can differ in value by 150 euros. Here is what to look for, in the order we check them at the counter.
Shutter count and what to consider high
The shutter of both is rated for approximately 100,000-200,000 cycles. This is a statistical estimate by the manufacturer, not an expiration date: we have seen A7 reach 180,000 shutter count without failures and others break at 40,000. That said, the count remains the most honest indicator of the camera's actual usage.
- Under 30,000 shutter count — practically a young camera, used by an amateur. No discount is justified based on this parameter.
- 30,000-100,000 shutter count — normal use over ten years. This is the range that includes most of the units we handle.
- Over 100,000 shutter count — a body that has worked hard. Purchasable, but it should be discounted by 80-120 euros compared to a unit in the same condition with half the cycles.
This data does not appear in Sony menus. It is read from the EXIF metadata of a JPEG file just taken, using tools such as exiftool or web services that read the ShutterCount field. If a private seller is unable to provide you with that number, does not know how to extract it, or prefers not to tell you. In both cases, treat the camera body as if it were above 100,000.
Exposed sensor: dust, scratches, and cleaning
Neither the A7 nor the A7 II closes the shutter when you turn the camera off. The sensor remains exposed with every lens change, and over ten years of swaps leave their mark. Always ask for a photo of the illuminated sensor at an angle, or a shot at f/16 against a white wall: dust appears as blurred dark spots.
The distinction that matters is between dust and permanent damage. Dust can be removed: a wet cleaning with swabs and solution eliminates it in 95% of cases. A scratch on the low-pass filter, however, is permanent; it appears as a sharp, in-focus line that remains identical in all shutter counts. - You already have OSS-stabilized lenses — a 28-70 OSS or a 24-240 OSS gives you stabilization where it matters, and the advantage of the II series narrows considerably.
- Shots predominantly on a tripod: landscape, architecture, still life. In those cases, you turn off IBIS anyway.
- Little or no video. Handheld video without stabilization is the only area where the first series becomes truly frustrating.
Get the A7 II if...
The €250–350 difference pays for itself quickly in these scenarios:
- Suits vintage manual lenses. A Takumar 55mm or a Helios 44-2 on the A7 II becomes stabilized: set the focal length manually in the menu and the IBIS works. Not on the first series, and this is the number one reason why we sell more II than I.
- You often shoot handheld indoors or at dusk. Three real stops mean a holdable 1/8 second with a 50mm, where on the A7 you would be at 1/60.
- You have large hands. The 599 grams and the deep grip of the II are not a detail: with a 24-70 f/2.8 mounted, the first series remains uncomfortable for the whole afternoon.
- You shoot video beyond the occasional or you think of keeping the body for five years. In that case, the amortization on the price difference is irrelevant.
