Anyone moving from the A6000 to the A6400 hoping for better files will be disappointed. The sensor is practically the same, the mount is identical, and the battery is the same one that drains quickly on both. Before discussing the differences — and there are some important ones — it is worth clearing the field of those that do not exist.

The same 24-megapixel sensor, five years later

The A6000 features a 24.3-megapixel Exmor APS-C sensor introduced in 2014. The A6400 features a 24.2-megapixel Exmor sensor from 2019. Up to ISO 1600, the files from both camera bodies are substantially identical: same effective resolution, same useful dynamic range in RAW, and same behavior in the highlights.

The difference exists, but it lies downstream of the sensor. The A6400 features an updated BIONZ X and a front-end LSI chip that the A6000 lacks. This is evident in two specific scenarios: above ISO 3200, where the A6400's noise remains finer and less colored, and in skin tone rendering in JPEG, where Sony has refined its color science compared to 2014. If you shoot in RAW and develop the files yourself, the advantage diminishes further.

NP-FW50 Battery: 360 certified shutter count, significantly fewer in reality

Both use the NP-FW50, and both have short battery life. The declared CIPA values are approximately 360 shutter count with the viewfinder and 410-420 with the screen, but these are measured under laboratory conditions. In real-world use — viewfinder on, continuous autofocus, occasional video clips, camera left on between shots — you get 250-300 shutter count.

  • Two spare batteries are mandatory, not an optional accessory. Budget 40-60 euros for two used originals or compatible ones from a decent brand.
  • Charging happens via USB in the body on both: without an external charger, you cannot recharge one battery while shooting with the other.
  • Batteries over ten years old lose capacity. On a used A6000, the included NP-FW50 is often the original one from the first owner.

E Mount APS-C: the lens lineup is identical

No E-mount lens performs better on one body than the other. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN, the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS, and the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 mount and operate identically on both bodies. The A6400 features 425 phase-detection points plus 425 contrast-detection points covering a slightly smaller area, 84%. The number matters less than Real-time Tracking, which analyzes the subject's color, distance, and pattern, and continues to track it even if it leaves the frame and re-enters. In practice: select the subject once and stop worrying about AF points.

Eye-AF: the one on the A6000 is a different beast

The A6000 has Eye-AF, but it must be assigned to a custom button and held down, and in early firmware versions it only works in AF-S. It recognizes only human faces. On the A6400, it is continuous, works in AF-C without pressing anything, and includes animal eye detection.

For a portrait at f/1.8, the useful depth of field on the eye is only a few centimeters: if the subject moves, the A6000 will focus on the eyelashes or the cheek. With dogs and cats, the difference is between a folder of rejects and three usable shots. If you need that performance for less, the Sony A6100 at 550 euros features the same AF system as the A6400.

Twenty-one shutter count at 11 fps is less than two seconds. Then the A6000 slows down and remains stuck until it has written to the card. Anyone photographing matches or moving children runs into this every time. The Sony a6500 at 600 euros has a buffer and in-sensor stabilizer superior to both, but its autofocus is from the generation prior to Real-time Tracking: more burst, less intelligence in tracking.

Video: the A6000 is not a choice, it is a compromise

The comparison ends here. If you shoot even just Instagram stories or talking-head videos for YouTube, the A6000 is not the budget option: it is the camera that forces you to work around its limitations. It does not record 4K, it has no microphone input, and it lacks log profiles. These are three structural deficiencies, not three lower price points.

Full HD versus 4K oversampled from 6K

The A6400 records 4K up to 30p: at 24/25p it reads the full sensor width and oversamples from approximately 6K, while at 30p a slight crop is applied. The result is visible not only when exporting in 4K: even when downscaling the footage to 1080p, the detail is cleaner, with less moiré on fabrics and sharper edges. The A6000 tops out at 1080/60p with the XAVC S codec at 50 Mbps on recent firmware, and it is a 1080p derived from a partially read sensor.

The 60p on the A6000 remains useful for a 40% slow motion, and for that purpose, it is perfectly adequate. However, if video is a real part of your work, the jump from 330-400 euros to 550-650 euros is not for the autofocus: you are paying for the codec.

Microphone input: the A6000 doesn't have one, period

No 3.5mm jack on the A6000 body. There are two alternatives, both inconvenient: record audio on a separate recorder and sync it in post, or accept the internal microphone, which picks up the noise of the hand on the dial and ambient hiss.

The A6400 has a mic input but no headphone output. This means you can only monitor audio by watching the on-screen levels: if the lavalier cable comes loose mid-shoot, you won't notice until post-production. It's a real limitation, and anyone telling you the A6400 is "a video camera" is overlooking this detail.

The A6400 overheating issue exists, but it is manageable

When recording 4K continuously in summer, the A6400 typically stops between 20 and 30 minutes with Auto Power OFF Temp set to Standard. Setting it to High pushes the limit beyond 40 minutes, with the camera body getting genuinely hot to the touch. Neither setting makes it a machine for an hour-long recorded lesson.

  • Sony A6000 — 1080/60p, no 4K, no mic jack. Suitable for occasional filming without high audio expectations.
  • Sony A6400 — 4K up to 30p (full width and oversampling from 6K at 24/25p), mic input, no headphone output, thermal limit 20-30 min. The sensible hybrid choice.

Screen, viewfinder and ergonomics: five years of difference are noticeable

Those upgrading from the A6000 to the A6400 won't notice the sensor. They will notice that they can touch the screen to focus, and that the viewfinder no longer "jumps" during a burst. These are differences that don't appear in side-by-side spec sheets, but that you feel every time you pick up the camera body.

The missing touch screen on the A6000

The A6000 features a 921,600-dot tilting screen with no touch functionality. To move the focus point, you must use the rear dial and the cross key, as this camera body does not have a joystick. In practice, this means four or five presses to move the AF point from the bottom-left corner to the center of the frame.

On the A6400, touch to focus reduces that gesture to a touch. The 180-degree upward flip is the other concrete difference: you can frame yourself while speaking to the camera, or check the composition with the camera held at arm's length above the crowd. The A6000, with a screen that tilts only about 90 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward, cannot do this.

Watch out for a detail that confuses many: on the A6400, the 180-degree flip-up screen occupies the hot shoe. If you mount an external microphone, the screen will get in the way. Those who truly film vlogs end up buying a side mount.

Viewfinder: 1.44 vs 2.36 million dots

Both are OLED, but the density changes the output. On the A6400, the 2.36-million-dot panel also supports an optional 120 fps refresh rate: when panning a moving subject, the image remains fluid instead of stuttering.

On the A6000, the 1.44-million-dot viewfinder remains perfectly usable for static photography: landscape, posed portrait, still life. The limitation emerges in burst mode, where the stuttering between frames makes it difficult to track a subject moving across the frame.

Partial tropicalization: what it actually protects

Sony states that the A6400 features seals on buttons and doors. In practice: light rain for twenty minutes and beach dust, not a downpour or direct wave spray. No A6400 is waterproof, and no reputable dealer will sell it as such.

The Sony A6000 has no declared protection. In our lab, we regularly see A6000 units with green corrosion on the battery slot contacts after a summer of beach use. It can be cleaned, but this is work that must be done before sale, not after.

The A6100 deserves a closer look. It is an A6400 without weather sealing and without S-Log profiles, but with the exact same autofocus system: 425 phase-detection points, Real-time Tracking, and Animal Eye-AF. If you don't shoot in log and don't work in the rain, you save 50-100 euros on zero features you would actually use.

Depreciation: The A6000 no longer loses value

The A6000 was released in 2014 and has completed its depreciation curve. One bought today for 360 euros, in excellent condition, will be worth 280-300 in two years. The A6400, bought for 600, is still dropping by 50-70 euros a year and will be around 450-480 in two years.

  • A6000: 24-month ownership cost, 60-80 euros. Approximately 3 euros per month.
  • A6400: 24-month ownership cost, 120-150 euros. Approximately 5-6 euros per month.

Put that way, the depreciation difference is not the deciding factor: it's 60 euros over two years. The same logic applies to high-end compact cameras, as we saw when discussing the used Sony RX100. The entry price weighs much more heavily than the depreciation curve.

Alternative outside the Sony ecosystem at the same price

The Nikon Z50 at 468 euros and the Nikon Z50 Mark II at 625 euros feature a significantly deeper grip and superior kit lenses compared to Sony. The limitation is the APS-C Z lens lineup, which remains limited compared to the E mount, where you can find dozens of Sigma and Viltrox primes.

The Canon EOS R100 is priced between 375 and 400 euros, nearly the price of an A6000. For photos, it uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF and performs well on stationary subjects, but it has a fixed, non-touch screen, and the 4K video is cropped with contrast-detect autofocus. It holds up as a first camera body; as an alternative to an A6400, no.

What we check in the lab for A6000 and A6400

Out of every ten A6000s we receive as trade-ins, at least three have oxidized battery slot contacts. This is not a rare defect: it is the typical issue for a 2014 camera body that has been kept in a bag with the battery inside for years. The camera turns on and works, but under load it shuts down without any apparent reason, leading the owner to believe the battery is dead. It is the contacts, and they can be cleaned in ten minutes. That is why every camera body goes through the workbench before being listed for sale.

Shutter count: what we consider high on an APS-C Sony

The A6000 shutter is rated for approximately 100,000 cycles. A 2015 A6000 with 30,000 shutter count still has two-thirds of its life ahead, and in practice many shutters far exceed the rated figure. Above 60,000, we adjust the price accordingly and state this clearly in the product listing, not in internal notes.

  • A6000 — connector rubber seals peeling off. The rubber covering for micro-USB and micro-HDMI loosens and hangs loose. Cosmetic, but must be reported.
  • A6000 — rear control dial skipping shutter counts. You turn it three clicks and the values jump five, or go back. We test this click by click across the entire range.
  • A6400 — loose screen hinge. Typical of used bodies for vlogging: the 180-degree flip, repeated thousands of times, loosens the mechanism.
  • A6400 — dust on the sensor. Sony's vibration cleaning system is not among the most effective. On bodies with frequent lens changes, we almost always find something at f/16.

Two-year warranty even on a 2014 camera body

On paper, it's a line of text, but in practice, it means we take on a risk and therefore check beforehand. Every camera body undergoes a complete inspection: testing of all autofocus points, shutter verification at all speeds from the slowest to 1/4000, hot pixel check with a long exposure at a closed shutter, sensor cleaning, and verification of all dials and buttons.

Then 24 months of coverage, identical on a seven-year-old A6400 and a twelve-year-old A6000. It’s not generosity: it’s that after the inspection, we know exactly what we are selling. A camera that comes back under warranty costs us far more than an extra half-hour at the bench.

Who should buy the A6000 and who the A6400

The choice doesn't depend on which camera body is better — the A6400 is, there's no debate about that. It depends on what you shoot and how much budget remains for lenses after buying the body. Here are the profiles we see most often at the counter, with the straight verdict.

Get the A6000 if...

Landscape, travel, street, or posed portrait photographers. In all these cases, the subject is stationary or moves in a predictable manner: the A6400's tracking works, but it won't save you from shutter counts you would have lost with the A6000.

  • Total budget under 700 euros and you also need to buy a lens. The Sony A6000 in stock with us is 360 euros: that leaves 340 euros for a used fast prime lens.
  • You don't shoot video, or you shoot very little. If video is just an occasional 1080p clip, the lack of 4K won't affect you.
  • It's your first mirrorless body and you want to see if the E system convinces you before making a real investment.

The 200 euros saved, invested in a used Sigma 30mm f/1.4, changes the files much more than the upgraded body does.

Get the A6400 if...

  • Photographers of moving subjects: kids running around the house, dogs at the park, amateur sports, weddings as a second camera body. Here, Real-time Tracking is not marketing; it is the difference between 3 certified shutter counts in focus out of 10 and 8 out of 10.
  • 4K video and decent audio recording. 3.5 mm microphone input: on the A6000, it simply does not exist.
  • You vlog. The 180-degree flip screen allows you to frame yourself. With the A6000, you are shooting blind.

If you fall into any of these three categories, the €550–650 is well spent. If you don't, you're paying €200 for features you won't use.

Don't buy either one if...

You're looking for full frame and your budget is 400-600 euros. In that range, there are two camera bodies that APS-C cannot match in terms of portraits:

The EOS RP focuses much better, but used RF lenses are still scarce and expensive: factor that in before buying the camera body.

The most common mistake: spending on the camera body instead of the lens

At the counter, this happens almost every week: someone walks in with an A6000 and the kit 16-50, complains that their photos "aren't as sharp as on Instagram," and asks if switching to an A6400 will fix it. The honest answer is no. The bottleneck isn't the camera body; it's the lens in front of it. With the 200 euro difference between the two bodies, you can buy a lens that changes your photos far more than an identical sensor inside a newer housing.

The 16-50 PZ included in the kit is the real bottleneck

The 16-50 f/3.5-5.6 PZ is a lens designed to fit the camera in a pocket, not to produce beautiful images. It is retractable, has such pronounced barrel distortion that the camera body corrects it via software before you even see it, and is visibly soft at the edges at maximum aperture. At 50 mm, it starts at f/5.6: indoors or in the evening, you are already at high ISO before you have even framed your shot.

Put that same zoom on a Sony A6100 for 550 euros and you will still get worse files than a Sony A6000 for 360 euros with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, which costs around 220 euros used. Three and a half stops more light, a background that truly separates, sharpness already at f/1.8.

The practical rule: if you photograph stationary or slow-moving subjects, the 240 euro difference should go into the lens, not the camera body. If you photograph subjects that move unpredictably, or if you film, then the additional expense on the A6400 is justified and should be made.

How many shutter counts are too many on a used Sony A6000?
