The D500 and D7500 share the same sensor and processor. This is not a minor detail: it means the file coming off the card is identical, given the same lens and exposure settings. What changes is everything surrounding the sensor, namely the system that allows you to keep a moving subject in focus and continue shooting without stopping. What they truly share: sensor, processor, files
If you place two shutter count images taken at the same time, with the same lens and the same ISO, one from the D500 and one from the D7500, side by side on a monitor, you cannot tell which is which. This is not an exaggeration: both camera bodies mount the same 20.9-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor without an anti-aliasing filter and the same EXPEED 5 processor. The file coming off the memory card is the same file.
This is the first thing to clarify because it is what costs the most time when comparing the two bodies. The price difference — around 300 euros on the used market — does not buy image quality. It buys the system surrounding the sensor.

The same file at 6400 ISO
At 6400 ISO, both cameras produce the same noise, with the same grain and the same color rendering in the shadows. The dynamic range in RAW is comparable: you recover the same shadows and clip the same highlights. Even at 12,800 ISO — the practical limit for a decent print or delivery — there is no winner.
This leads to a simple rule: if you are only looking for image quality, the D500 has nothing to offer that the D7500 does not already provide. A landscape photographer, a studio portraitist, or someone shooting still life or architecture is paying 300 euros for features they will never use. Those 300 euros, spent on a lens, will improve your photos far more than the body will.
Where parity ends: the system around the sensor
The divergence begins as soon as the subject moves or the workday gets long. Three areas, which we will cover in the upcoming sections:

Autofocus: 153 points vs 51, what changes in the field
The difference between the two AF modules does not lie in the number printed on the spec sheet, but in where those points are arranged on the frame. The D500 features the Multi-CAM 20K: 153 total points, of which 99 are cross-type and 55 are manually selectable, with sensitivity up to -4 EV on the central point. The D7500 uses the Multi-CAM 3500 II: 51 points, 15 cross-type, sensitivity up to -3 EV. These are two different generations of modules, mounted on bodies released just over a year apart — the D500 in January 2016, the D7500 in April 2017.
Frame coverage: why it matters more than the number of points
On the D500, the AF points reach almost to the edge of the frame, both horizontally and vertically. On the D7500, they remain confined to the central third, with empty margins all around. This is where the difference is felt, not in the speed of focus lock.
A real-world example. A striker cutting across the flank, framed with a 70-200 from the sideline: with the D500, you keep him locked on even when he’s a tenth of a frame from the edge. With the D7500, the subject leaves the area covered by the AF points, focus is lost, and you’re left with two options — recompose quickly while the subject is running, or keep him centered and crop in post, sacrificing resolution.
- Stably off-center subject (composed sports portrait): both work, just select the right point.
- Subject moving towards the edges: clear advantage for the D500.
- Portrait orientation with subject at the top: on the D7500, there is often no point where you need it.
3D-tracking and subject recognition
Both read the scene with the same 180,000-pixel RGB sensor, which is the engine of the 3D-tracking. The D500, however, has many more points for the subject to move across, making the transition from one point to another smoother and lock losses less frequent.
That said, let's keep things realistic: Nikon's 2016 3D-tracking system relies on color and contrast; it is not the eye recognition found in recent mirrorless cameras. It will lose focus on a swift in flight against a bright sky or on a cyclist in a peloton wearing similar jerseys. Those coming from promotional videos showcasing subject detection on the Z series will be disappointed by both.
When 51 points are enough
If the subject moves along a predictable axis and stays near the center, the D7500's 51 points do the job without regrets. Indoor basketball from the sideline, athletics with the athlete in the lane, downhill skiing along a known line, or a motorcycle on the track from a fixed position: in all these cases, you keep the 300 euro difference in your pocket and put it toward a faster lens, which matters more for indoor AF than the module itself.
Burst and buffer: the number that truly stops the shutter count
The difference between 10 fps and 8 fps is two frames per second: in the field, you hardly ever notice it. Between a buffer of 200 RAW shutter count and 50, however, there is a chasm, and you discover it at exactly the worst moment. The D500 handles approximately 20 seconds of continuous burst in RAW without ever slowing down. The D7500 in 14-bit lossless compressed RAW stops at around 50 files, which is just over 6 seconds.
What happens when the buffer fills up
The camera doesn't shut down: it slows down. You go from 8 fps to 2-3 fps, then to one shutter count every time the card frees up space. The viewfinder stays dark longer between frames and you lose visual contact with the subject.
A concrete example. Youth football, an action starting from the attacking third: hold the button down to track the ball carrier, the buffer fills up halfway through the field, and when the shot on goal arrives, the camera stutters. Same thing at the start of the 100 meters, where the useful sequence lasts 3-4 seconds but you often press two seconds early to be safe. The D7500 can handle it if you shoot in short bursts of 2-3 seconds. It cannot handle it if you hold the button down.
Specs: XQD/CFexpress vs SD UHS-I
The D500 features an XQD/CFexpress Type B slot alongside an SD slot. That is the real difference: you can clear the buffer while continuing to take certified shutter count, so in practice you almost never fill it up. The D7500 has a single SD slot on a UHS-I bus, which tops out at a theoretical 104 MB/s.
Two notes on the budget:
- 128 GB CFexpress Type B: €90-130. Factor this into the cost of the D500; it is not an optional accessory if you want the performance described above.
- Do not spend on a UHS-II card for the D7500. The bottleneck is the camera's bus, not the card. A decent UHS-I card for €30-40 delivers the exact same result as a €90 card.
Dual slot vs single slot
This is not about speed, but about risk. Photographers covering weddings, paid races, or one-off events write to two cards in parallel: if one fails, the work is safe. The D500 allows this (backup, overflow, or RAW on one card and JPEG on the other). The D7500 does not.
For a parent on the sidelines, it is irrelevant. For someone delivering photos to a paying client, it is the reason the D7500 drops off the list, before even looking at the autofocus or the burst rate.

Body, ergonomics, battery: the part you feel in your hand
The D500 is built like a scaled-down D5: magnesium alloy top plate and rear, carbon fiber composite front, seals on every door, and buttons with crisp travel. The D7500 uses a carbon fiber composite monocoque, without the magnesium parts found in the D7200. Both are weather-sealed and withstand rain, but the protection level declared by Nikon is not the same. In the field, the difference becomes apparent after three years in a bag: used D500s that come through our lab arrive with less play in the dials and the mount.

The joystick and dedicated controls
Moving the AF point with the joystick while tracking the action is a real operational difference, not a technical spec gimmick. Your thumb stays in place, the point moves diagonally with a single gesture, and your eye never leaves the viewfinder. On the D7500, you do the same thing with the multi-selector, which requires repeated presses and forces you to adjust your grip. With 153 points to traverse, the slowness adds up.
The D500 also features a dedicated AF-ON button and illuminated controls, which are handy in a stadium at night. These are details that only matter if you work under pressure. Those who shoot at a leisurely pace will never use them.
Weight and long days
A 140-gram difference on the camera body may seem negligible on a spec sheet. But with a 70-200 f/2.8 mounted for six hours in the field, it becomes a factor, especially since the D500 invites you to mount the MB-D17 grip, which adds approximately 350 grams including the battery.
For many, the lighter D7500 is an advantage, not a compromise. If you shoot while traveling, in the mountains, or follow your son on the field on Sundays, 720 grams with an 18-140 around your neck make the day better. And the D7500's 950 CIPA shutter count comfortably covers a match or a day trip. The D500's battery life advantage matters if you are out for two days without power, not if you come home in the evening.
What they cost used today and what they will be worth in two years
By mid-2026, a D500 in excellent condition ranges between 750 and 950 euros for the camera body alone, while a D7500 sits between 450 and 600 euros. The spread of approximately 300 euros has remained stable over the last two years, and that in itself says something: when two cameras depreciate at the same rate, the gap narrows, but that has not happened here.
Within those brackets, the shutter count weighs more than the aesthetic condition. A D500 with 40,000 shutter count sits at the top of the price range, while one with 150,000 falls below 750, even if the camera body is flawless. The situation is simpler with the D7500: above 60,000 shutter count, the price drops towards 450, because the typical user base for that machine has never exceeded that number.
The real cost: body plus cards plus accessories
The price of the body is not the price of the camera. The D500 uses XQD or CFexpress Type B, and neither is a negligible expense: a 64 GB card costs 70-90 euros, and a dedicated USB reader another 40-50 euros. If you come from a setup full of SD cards, those cards are useless to you here.

With the grip, the D500 comes close to €1,200. It is only worth it if you shoot vertically for hours, not for battery life: 1,240 certified shutter counts CIPA are already enough to cover a full day.
Long-term value retention
Over the last three years, the D500 has lost about 20% of its value on the used market, while the D7500 has lost nearly 35%. The reason is not build quality but demand: birdwatchers and sports photographers with F-mount kits including 300mm f/4, 200-500mm, and 500mm f/5.6 lenses do not have a DSLR successor, and the Z50 II does not fulfill the same role when paired with the FTZ II in front of a heavy telephoto lens.
In two years, the D500 will be around 600-700 euros, and the D7500 around 350-400. Anyone buying a D500 today for 850 euros and reselling it in 2028 will have spent approximately 200 euros over three years of use. Shutter count, shutter and what we check in the lab
Nikon rates the shutter life of the D500 at 200,000 cycles and the D7500 at 150,000. These are test figures, not guarantees: they mean that in a test batch, the median of the units exceeded that threshold. Some shutters fail at 80,000 shutter count, while others reach 300,000 without any intervention.
The point is that the ratio of price to wear matters more than the absolute number. A D500 ex-professional with 180,000 shutter count at 750 euros is a concrete risk: it is close to the declared end of life and shutter replacement costs between 350 and 450 euros for parts and labor. An amateur D7500 with 25,000 shutter count at 550 euros has at least ten years of normal use ahead of it. For the same spend, the second one is the better deal.
How to read the shutter count and why to be skeptical of listings
The shutter count is stored in the EXIF metadata of any JPEG coming out of the camera, in the Shutter Count field. You can read it for free using ExifTool or sites like camerashuttercount.com by uploading the file. NEF RAW files work, but some tools read them less accurately: a JPEG is better.
In private listings, this data is often missing entirely, or appears as "few shutter counts" or "hobby use". These are not facts, they are opinions. Before finalizing a deal, always request an original JPEG, unedited and not sent via WhatsApp — WhatsApp compression regenerates the file and deletes the EXIF. If the seller refuses or stalls, you already have your answer.
What we check at the counter before listing
Every D500 and D7500 that enters our workshop undergoes five checks:
- Shutter count reading and comparison with cosmetic condition. A glossy body with 150,000 shutter count has been cleaned: suspicious.
- AF fine tuning on an inclined target, to verify front and back focus of the AF module at different distances.
- Sensor inspection under raking light, using an angled LED torch: it reveals adhered dust and micro-scratches that are not visible on screen.
- Timed burst with an empty card, to verify that the declared 10 fps and 8 fps are real and that the buffer clears within the expected times.
- Seals of the battery door, card slot, and mount: they harden and thin out, and that is where water gets in.
Typical defects we see on these two models
On the D500, a recurring issue is wear on the shutter button on ex-sports examples: the half-press travel becomes uncertain, and the camera fires when it shouldn't. The AF joystick also loosens, and users who have used the MB-D17 grip often arrive with the body's rubber corners lifted.
On the D7500, the number one flaw is the hinge of the tilting screen, which after a few thousand openings becomes loose and no longer holds the angle. Second, the memory card slot cover: the plastic tab cracks. Neither of these is dramatic, but they must be factored into the price, and we declare them in the listing instead of leaving you to discover them at home.
What if you switched to mirrorless? Nikon Z50 II and alternatives
Half of the customers who walk in asking for a D500 leave with a Z50 II. Not because we push it: but because when we explain that they don't have F-mount lenses to recycle, the math changes. The Nikon Z50 Mark II is currently priced at 625 euros, while the first-generation Nikon Z50 is 468 euros. These are figures that sit between a D7500 and a D500, so the question is legitimate.
When mirrorless is truly worth it
The only deciding factor is how many F-mount lenses you already own. If the answer is zero or one, the DSLR isn't giving you anything extra. The Z50 II features subject recognition derived from the Z8, automatically detecting people, animals, and vehicles, and shoots at 11 fps. Neither DSLR has subject recognition; regarding burst speed, the D500 is close with its 10 fps, while the D7500 lags behind at 8 fps.
The mirrorless clearly wins in three cases:
- Shoot video too: the Z50 II records 4K without crop at 30p, and continuous autofocus in video on a DSLR is a whole different ballgame.
- Shoot portraits as well as sports: eye detection on a stationary or slow-moving subject is the real generational leap, more so than in action.
- Starting from scratch: 625 euros for the camera body plus a 50-250 DX Z gives you a current system, not one at the end of its life.
Outside the Nikon ecosystem, the benchmark is the Sony a6500, which trades at similar prices on the used market and features in-body image stabilization. However, it is a 2016 camera body with an APS-C E-mount lens lineup that suffers from the same gaps as the DX Z system.
When a DSLR is still the better choice
Here, Nikon’s marketing stays silent, so we’ll speak up. There are few DX lenses with a Z mount, and none are designed for sports: the 50-250 f/4.5-6.3 is a good all-rounder, but at 250 mm it closes down to f/6.3, which isn’t enough in a gym or at sunset. To go beyond that, you need full-frame Z lenses, which cost twice as much as a used 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S.
The FTZ II adapter only solves half the problem. It works well with AF-S and AF-P lenses, maintaining autofocus and stabilization. With older AF-D lenses lacking an internal motor, autofocus does not work: they remain manual focus. If you have an 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D in a drawer, switching to Z turns it into a manual focus lens.
There are still two things that no mirrorless under 900 euros can offer you: the D500's 200 RAW buffer and a lag-free optical viewfinder, which some still prefer for tracking unpredictable subjects. The verdict: who should buy which
After seeing dozens of both models come through the counter, the pattern is clear: nobody goes back from the D500 to the D7500, but plenty of people bought the D500 without actually needing it. The €300 price difference on the camera body is only justified by usage frequency, not by ambition.
Buy the D7500 if...
- You shoot sports once or twice a month, typically your child's championship or an amateur race.
- The subject is almost always in the center of the frame and does not suddenly enter from the edges.
- You do not sell the photos: no client will hold you accountable for a file lost on a card.
- The total budget is under 700 euros, lens included. With 550 euros for the camera body, you have 150 euros left for a used 55-200 VR, and those 150 euros of lens weigh on the result more than 51 additional AF points.
Buy the D500 if...
- Take the camera out every week. The 200 RAW buffer only matters if you actually saturate it.
- You already own a 70-200 f/2.8 or a 300 f/4: the camera body becomes the weak link in the chain, not the other way around.
- You need dual card slots because you shoot paid events. It’s not paranoia: a corrupted SD card at a wedding costs more than 300 euros.
- You do wildlife or birdwatching, where the subject enters from the edge of the frame and peripheral tracking is everything.
Don't buy either of them if...
There are three situations in which both are the wrong purchase, and we tell you this even though we have both in stock.
- You don't have Nikon F lenses. Starting from scratch on an APS-C DSLR system in 2026 means buying a lens lineup that no manufacturer is still developing. The Nikon Z50 Mark II at 625 euros starts with a live Z mount, featuring subject recognition that the D7500 never had.
- Your sport is indoor with low light and the budget is limited. In the gym or at the pool, APS-C forces you to buy expensive f/2.8 lenses. A used full-frame body from a previous generation gives you more headroom with high ISOs for the same overall cost.
- You need modern video. Neither camera offers decent video autofocus, and neither has a front-facing flip-out screen. The Canon EOS R50 V at 550 euros was born for that: if 60% of what you produce is video, a DSLR is a choice against yourself.
If you fall into the first category, the D7500 will serve you for years without ever making you feel its limitations. If you fall into the second, the D500 is the last serious APS-C DSLR Nikon has built, and it will have no successors.
