Adding a 35mm f/1.8G alongside the 50mm only makes sense if you shoot reportage in tight interiors, where that 15mm difference truly changes the framing. Watch out for AF-D lenses without a motor

The D750 has the autofocus motor in the body. This means that AF-D lenses from the 90s and 2000s — the 50mm f/1.8D, the 85mm f/1.8D, the 35mm f/2D — focus automatically without adapters. On Nikon Z mirrorless cameras, the same lens, mounted on an FTZ adapter, remains manual focus: the FTZ does not transmit mechanical drive. Those who photograph children running around the house or ceremonies with little time to think find a real advantage in recent mirrorless cameras: focus on the eye and the camera tracks it. It must be stated clearly that the comparison is not on equal terms:

  • Nikon Z50 Mark II — 625 euro. APS-C, not full frame: you lose a good stop of performance at high ISOs and the depth of field of the full-frame format. In return, you get modern eye-AF and an electronic viewfinder that shows the exposure before the shutter count.
  • Nikon Z50 — 470 euro. First generation, autofocus is slower than the Mark II but already superior to the D750 for moving faces. At this price, it is the most affordable way to find out if mirrorless is right for you.

A detail that matters at the counter: when switching to Z, you can mount your F lenses using the FTZ adapter, which costs around 130 euros used. You don't have to throw your lenses away.

  5. Sensor test at f/16 on a uniform sky. Shoot the sky or a blurred light wall at f/16, then open the file and increase the contrast. Dust and spots will appear. Dust can be cleaned; a scratch on the low-pass filter cannot.
