In this article, I lay out what you actually need to shoot sports: from the camera body to the lenses, from the accessories that make or break a day to the mistakes I see most often. What makes a camera body suitable for sports
Three things, in order of importance: autofocus that truly tracks the subject, a sustainable burst rate for more than a couple of seconds, and a sensor that performs well with telephoto lenses. Everything else — megapixels, 4K video, tilting screen — counts for zero when you are chasing a striker breaking away on a counter-attack. Customers who walk into the store asking for "a camera for sports" are often looking at the wrong specifications.
Autofocus: tracking, not just AF points
"425 AF points" on the spec sheet means nothing on its own. What matters is how the camera body uses those points to lock onto a moving subject and keep it in focus while it changes direction, speed, and distance. It's called subject tracking, and it's where camera bodies from the last 6-7 years have made a huge leap.
The practical difference: an older DSLR with 51 cross-type AF points but no modern tracking locks onto the subject, then loses it as soon as it passes behind a player or moves out of the central point. A recent mirrorless with eye-detection and subject tracking follows it as it moves across the entire frame, even when it enters and exits the composition.
What to look for in the specs, in order:
- Continuous subject tracking (not just single AF)
- Eye-detection or face-detection with configurable priority
- AF points covering at least 80% of the frame, not just the central area
- AF low-light sensitivity down to -3 EV or better (indoor arenas, evening matches)
Burst and buffer: fps without a deep buffer are useless
A camera that shoots 11 fps but fills the buffer after 15 RAW files is useless for sports. In less than a second and a half, you're stuck waiting for the card to finish writing while the action continues. An 8 fps burst with a 40-50 RAW buffer is better: keep your finger on the button for a full five seconds and cover the entire action.
The number to ask the seller is not "how many fps it does", but "how many RAW burst shots before it slows down". If they cannot answer, check the official technical specifications under buffer depth. For serious amateur sports, look for at least 30 continuous RAW shots, ideally 40+. The memory card also matters: a fast UHS-II card clears the buffer in a few seconds, while a slow UHS-I card keeps you stuck for ten.
Sensor: APS-C and Micro 4/3 offer advantages in sports photography
Full frame is not automatically better for sports; in fact, it's the opposite. The crop factor of an APS-C (1.5x Sony/Nikon/Fuji, 1.6x Canon) or Micro 4/3 (2x) sensor extends the field of view of telephoto lenses without requiring you to buy longer, more expensive optics.
A 70-200mm f/2.8 on APS-C becomes equivalent to a 105-300mm. On Micro 4/3 you reach 140-400mm equivalents. For those photographing football, athletics, or cycling from the sidelines, it means covering the action with an optic that costs half as much and weighs 600 grams instead of 1500. Under 700 euros for the camera body, choosing APS-C or Micro 4/3 is almost always the sensible choice for amateur sports.
Camera bodies under 500 euros: what you can really do
In this price range, you are buying a camera body for amateur daytime sports, not one capable of handling sports in any condition. The difference lies entirely here: with good light and subjects at medium distance, these bodies keep up, but as soon as the light drops or the pace picks up, they start to show their limitations. Let's see what to choose and what to leave on the shelf.
Sony A6000: the entry-level workhorse
The Sony A6000 at 360 euros remains the most sensible purchase under 500 euros for those starting with sports. 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, real burst rate of 11 fps, hybrid autofocus with 179 points covering almost the entire frame. It is perfectly adequate for youth football on Saturday afternoons, track and field athletics, or road cycling.
The real limitations are two. The buffer fills up after about 21 RAW shutter count, then slows down significantly: it's enough for a goal attempt, but for a complete series of high jumps it starts to frustrate. The EVF viewfinder is small and struggles in backlight. If you're coming from a DSLR, prepare for an adaptation period.
Canon EOS R100 and Nikon Z30: Entry into Modern Mirrorless
The Canon EOS R100 at 400 euros and the Nikon Z30 at 450 euros are recent, lightweight camera bodies with very modern menus. They feature subject tracking with face and animal recognition. On paper, they seem like the natural evolution of the A6000. In practice, for sports photography, they need to be evaluated honestly.
- Canon EOS R100: 3.5 fps in AF Servo (continuous); the stated 6.5 fps is only achieved in One-Shot. Short buffer in RAW. Perfect for portrait and travel, but it hits the lower limit for sports.
- Nikon Z30: 11 fps, but the AF tracking system is tuned more for video and vlogging than for fast, unpredictable subjects. No viewfinder, screen only: in full sun on a football field, it’s a real problem.

When NOT to buy in this price range
If you shoot volleyball, basketball, indoor hockey, or night sports, stop. Entry-level APS-C sensors under €500 show visible noise at ISO 3200, and with f/5.6 lenses in a gym, you easily end up at ISO 6400 or higher. The same applies to those who want to print large or sell their certified shutter count. Here, it makes more sense to move up to the €500–700 range or invest first in a fast lens, then in the body.
€500-700 range: the sweet spot for most
This is where the real game is played for serious amateur sports. With this budget, you get a body that tracks well, offers a fast burst rate, and has a reliable buffer. Below this threshold, compromises are significant; above it, returns diminish.
When choosing among the three systems I propose, consider the type of sport. Fast-paced sports at medium distances (soccer, basketball, athletics) benefit from Sony's autofocus. Sports requiring long-range reach (motorsport, birdwatching, skiing) benefit from the 2x crop of Micro 4/3. If you film as much as you photograph, Panasonic makes sense.
Sony A6400: Real-Time Tracking AF that changes the game
The Sony A6400 we have today at 650 euros is probably the most sensible choice for those shooting sports where subjects move unpredictably. 11 fps burst with continuous tracking, 425 phase-detection AF points covering almost the entire frame, Real-Time Tracking that locks onto a subject and holds it.
The Eye-AF works even on moving subjects: for those shooting youth soccer or skating, it makes a huge difference compared to older systems. The camera body is small and light, which matters when carrying a 70-350mm on your shoulder for four hours. The 1.5x crop factor means a 70-200mm gives you a 105-300mm equivalent: sufficient coverage for 90% of field situations.
A valid alternative: the Sony A6100 at 600 euros. Same sensor, same AF tracking, same burst rate. It has a less defined viewfinder and no S-Log recording. For pure sports, the differences are marginal.
Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II: 60 fps and 2x crop
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II at 600 euros is a pro-grade Micro 4/3 camera. Serious weather-sealed construction, 5-stop IBIS that allows you to shoot handheld at 1/125s with long telephoto lenses, 60 fps burst in electronic mode with locked AF and 18 fps with continuous AF. Deep buffer that handles long sequences.
The 2x crop factor is the real asset: a 40-150mm f/2.8 becomes an 80-300mm f/2.8 equivalent. For motorsport, birds in flight, and any tele-intensive sport, you carry less weight and spend less on glass. The limitation is the smaller sensor: beyond ISO 3200, noise becomes visible, so indoor sports in dimly lit gyms remain problematic.
Panasonic Lumix G90 and GH5: the photo-video hybrid
The Panasonic GH5 at 470 euros and the Panasonic Lumix G90 at 450 euros are the right choice if you film as much as you photograph. The GH5 remains a benchmark in video today: 4K 60p, robust codecs, V-Log profiles. The limitation is the DFD contrast autofocus: it struggles with subjects moving towards the camera compared to Sony's phase detection. It works for lateral panning and predictable sports, but less so for frontal football action.

Used full frame under 700 euros: does it make sense for sports?
Short answer: almost never, and I say this against my own interest as a seller who also deals in full frame. Under €700, the used full frame gear you'll find is first-generation mirrorless or dated DSLRs. These bodies are designed for portrait, landscape, and static reportage, not for chasing a striker cutting into the box or a cyclist on a descent. A large sensor won't help if the autofocus loses the subject on the second shutter count.
The appeal is easy to understand: paying less than for a new APS-C body to get "the real sensor" sounds like a deal. In sports, it becomes a compromise you pay for every time you bring home half of your shutter count out of focus.
Sony A7 Mark II: the affordable full frame only makes sense if...
The Sony A7 Mark II is available in our showcase for 550-580 euros, featuring 24 megapixels and 5-axis in-body stabilization. On paper, it looks perfect. In practice, for sports photography, it has two limitations that cannot be circumvented:
- 5 fps burst with a buffer that fills up quickly in RAW. For a two-second game action, we're talking about ten frames: few to choose the good frame from.
- First-generation hybrid autofocus: works well on a single shot, struggles with continuous tracking of a subject moving erratically.
It makes sense if you shoot track and field with predictable key moments (starts, jumps, finishes), artistic gymnastics with held poses, golf, or dressage. Sports where you anticipate the moment and press the shutter at the right time. For soccer, basketball, MTB downhill, or fast cycling: skip it and get a modern APS-C.
Canon EOS RP: lightweight but with limitations in sports
The Canon EOS RP at 600 euros is the lightest full frame on the market: 485 grams for the camera body alone. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is excellent for single-point autofocus, especially on faces, and is the reason why many choose it as their first full frame.
The issue for sports is the same pattern: 5 fps burst in One-Shot, 4 fps in Servo AF, and continuous tracking performance that doesn't hold up against more aggressive APS-C bodies. It was designed for portrait, travel, and home video. Excellent for "slow" sports — golf, bocce, competitive chess, archery — where you care about the single perfect shutter count in focus on the face.

If your budget is 700 euros and you do fast-paced sports, spend it on a more responsive APS-C and a decent lens.
Lenses: where you should really invest
In sports, you change the camera body every five years, but a good lens lasts you twenty. Anyone walking into the store with 1,500 euros and spending it all on the body while leaving a cheap 70-300 f/4-5.6 behind is making the mistake in reverse. Flip the ratio: 600 on the body, 900 on the lens, and the quality of your shutter count rises by a whole level.
70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4: the zoom that covers 80% of sports
The 70-200 is the Swiss Army knife of sports photography. Soccer up to midfield, basketball from the free-throw line, tennis at the baseline, volleyball, and track and field: with this focal length, you are always covered. On APS-C, it becomes a 105-300mm equivalent, making it even more useful for large venues.
The practical difference between f/2.8 and f/4 is this: with f/2.8 at 1/1000 and ISO 1600, you correctly expose an evening match under LED floodlights; with f/4, you have to go up to ISO 3200 for the same scene. On a modern sensor, both ISO settings are very clean, so if you only shoot sports outdoors during the day, the 70-200 f/4 saves you 700-900 euros and almost half a kilogram in weight. For indoor and evening shoots, f/2.8 is worth every cent.
100-400mm or 150-600mm: when you really need the extra reach
The typical mistake is thinking that more reach equals better photos. False. The 100-400 makes real sense only for motorsport, long-field sports like rugby viewed from the stands, horse racing, and for those who photograph birds in flight alongside sports. The 150-600 comes into play when you are chronically far away: birdwatching, safaris, and motorsport viewed from the high stands of a racetrack.
Brutal honesty: a 150-600 weighs between 1.9 and 2.1 kg, costs 800-1400 euros used, and has a maximum aperture of f/6.3 at 600mm. That means high ISOs even on cloudy days. Before buying it, try it for a weekend on rental. Eight out of ten photographers who buy it discover that the 70-200 + 1.4x extender covers 90% of their needs at half the weight.
Bright 85mm or 135mm f/1.8 primes: the weapon for indoor sports
Italian gyms are poorly lit. A 70-200 f/2.8 in a provincial gym pushes you to ISO 6400 to stay at 1/800. A 135mm f/1.8 in the same gym keeps you at ISO 1600. A two-stop difference means clean files instead of noisy ones.
The 85mm f/1.8 performs well for basketball, volleyball, judo, and boxing: all sports where you are courtside. The 135mm f/1.8 extends coverage to indoor tennis and artistic gymnastics. They cost less than a comparable f/2.8 zoom and give you a decisive advantage where light is scarce.
Accessories that change your day (they are not optional)
You choose the camera body and lens once, and then you stick with them for years. Accessories, however, are used in every single shutter count, and when they are missing, it shows immediately in your photos. Those who come to the shop after their first day of competition always return with the same list: monopod, faster memory cards, a second battery. Include them in your initial budget, not after the first disaster.
Monopod: the thing that saves your back and sharpness
A 70-200mm f/2.8 lens weighs 1.4 kg on its own. Add a camera body weighing 600-700 grams and you are holding 2 kg with your arm extended for hours. After 3 hours without support, your hand trembles, your head rests on the viewfinder with less control, and micro-shake appears even at 1/1000s.
A monopod solves the problem with a modest investment:
- Manfrotto 290 light or equivalent: 60-80 euros new, supports up to 5 kg, collapses to 50 cm. Sufficient for 90% of sports uses.
- Arca-Swiss style quick release head: 30-40 euros. Allows switching from monopod to handheld in 2 seconds when the action gets close.
- Mini tripod foot: 25 euros. Screws underneath and provides static support during dead time. Convenient on the sidelines.
On the sidelines of football or athletics, a monopod allows you to stand relaxed between actions without putting weight on your back. By the end of the day, you feel the difference.
SD Cards: Write Speed Matters as Much as Capacity
This is where the most expensive mistakes are made. A 128 GB V30 card may seem large, but it writes at a sustained 30 MB/s. A burst at 10 fps in RAW (files of about 25 MB) generates 250 MB per second: the camera body's buffer fills up in 4 seconds, and then everything stops until the card catches up.
What you really need for sports:
- UHS-II V60 minimum: sustained write speed of 60 MB/s. Sony Tough, ProGrade Cobalt, Lexar Professional. Cost 60-90 euros for 128 GB.
- V90 if the camera body supports it: 90 MB/s sustained, practically infinite buffer for JPEG and well-manageable in RAW. 120-180 euros.
- Two 128 GB cards are better than one 256 GB card: if one gets corrupted, you don't lose the entire day's work.
Always check if the body supports UHS-II (presence of the second row of pins in the slot). A Sony A6400 supports it, a Canon EOS RP does not: you would be spending money on a speed the body cannot utilize.
Spare batteries and grips
A race day means a minimum of 1500-2000 shutter count, plus two to three hours with the camera on in stand-by between actions. Mirrorless cameras drain batteries: the Sony A6400 claims 410 CIPA shutter count, but in real-world sports conditions, with continuous AF and the screen on, you drop below 300. The Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II holds up better, but even there, you stay under 400 real-world shutter count.
The rule: number of batteries = (expected shutter count / actual shutter count per charge) + 1. Three original batteries cover any day. Cheap 15-euro compatible batteries work, but last 70% of the original and lose capacity after 100 cycles. For intensive use, the original at 60-80 euros is more economical over time.
Mistakes I see most often in the shop
Those who come in asking for "a camera for my child's sports" tend to make the same three mistakes. I've seen them at the counter for ten years, and nothing ever changes. It's worth naming them, so at least those who read this won't make them.
Buy the top body and the 18-55mm lens kit
This is the most common mistake. The customer spends €1,200 on a new camera body, takes the 18-55mm kit zoom in the bundle because "it's already included," and shows up at the sideline of a football match. At 55mm on APS-C, you're at 82mm equivalent: you frame the goalkeeper, but the striker in the opposite box becomes a six-pixel dot.
The 18-55mm kit lens is a short-range optic for reportage, landscapes, and environmental portraits. It doesn't even reach midfield. For sports, you need at least a 70-200mm, and for open disciplines like athletics or cycling, a 100-400mm.
The correct budget allocation for sports is approximately as follows:
- 40% camera body (a used Sony A6400 or Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II is sufficient)
- 50% telephoto lens (this is where the bulk of the budget goes)
- 10% accessories (monopod, second battery, fast memory card)
A used mid-range body for €600 and a 70-200mm f/4 for €500 are a better deal than a top-tier body for €1,200 with the included zoom kit.
Chasing fps without checking the buffer
Brochures shout "20 fps" or "40 fps with electronic shutter," and customers arrive convinced they need that number. Almost never do they ask how long the burst lasts before the buffer saturates.
A 20 fps burst that stops after 1.5 seconds produces 30 shutter count and then the camera slows down to 3 fps until the buffer is empty. In football, the moment of the goal arrives at 1.8 seconds: and you are already out of burst.
What matters is sustained performance: 8-10 fps that the camera maintains for 80-100 consecutive shutter count in RAW are far more useful than 20 fps that die in two seconds. A UHS-II card with 90 MB/s real-world speed makes more of a difference than any marketing spec on the electronic shutter.
Underestimating the condition of used telephoto lenses
A 70-200mm weighs 1.3 kg, and the metal mount puts stress on the mount. If the lens has traveled in a backpack without shock protection or has taken a hit, optical decentering is almost guaranteed: at full aperture, the left or right side of the frame is blurry even if the subject is in focus in the center.
At our Ancona workshop, every used lens undergoes three checks: decentering test on a flat target at various distances, AF motor verification on moving subjects, and diaphragm electronics inspection at extreme apertures. If a lens fails any one of these tests, it is not put up for sale.
For beginners: the honest minimum setup
Three setups are enough to cover the entire spectrum of amateur sports: 500, 800, and 1200 euros, complete. Below, you’ll find what I hand to customers who walk into the shop with a defined budget and a specific question: “I want to photograph my son playing soccer, where do I start?” No hypothetical future upgrades, no “if you like it later, buy this.” Three kits that work right away.
€500 Setup: Sony A6000 + used 55-210mm
The Sony A6000 at 360 euros in our catalog is the camera to start with if the budget is real and non-negotiable. 11 fps burst, 179 AF points with near-total sensor coverage, APS-C with 1.5x crop that turns the 55-210mm into an 82-315mm equivalent. For your son's daytime match, track and field, or road cycling, it is sufficient.
Add a used Sony 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 (€130-150 on the market) and you stay under €500 all-in. The real limit is light: with an overcast sky or after 5:00 PM in winter, the autofocus starts to hesitate and ISOs rise. Good to know beforehand, not to discover later.
€800 Setup: Sony A6400 + used 70-200mm f/4
This is where the system stops being a limitation. The Sony A6400 at 650 euros features Real-time Tracking inherited from the flagship models: the autofocus locks onto the subject and tracks it even behind partial obstacles. For team sports, it is a different world compared to the A6000.
Paired with a used Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G (€550–650, though many start with a Tamron 70-180mm or an adapted vintage Zeiss 70-200mm to stay within budget). Equivalent to 105-300mm on crop, with a constant f/4 aperture that handles mixed lighting conditions. This is the setup I recommend to 70% of customers asking for "a serious camera for my child's sports."
€1,200 Setup: Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II + Pro 40-150mm f/2.8
For those shooting tele-intensive sports — horse racing, motorsport, football from the touchline, sporting wildlife — who don't want to strain their backs. The OM-D E-M1 mark II at 600 euros offers 18 fps burst with AF-C, a deep buffer, and genuine weather sealing (tested in the rain). The 2x crop factor of Micro 4/3 turns the 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro (550-600 euros used) into an 80-300mm f/2.8 equivalent.
An 80-300 f/2.8 stabilized full-frame lens costs over 3000 euros and weighs 1.5 kg. Here you get the total kit for 1200 euros, weighing under 1300 grams. The downside is noise at high ISOs: it becomes visible above ISO 3200. For sports in full daylight, it is invisible.
Frequently asked questions
Do you really need full frame for sports photography?
No. In fact, for most amateur sports, APS-C or Micro 4/3 are more suitable: the crop factor extends the reach of the lens and reduces the weight and cost of the optics. Full frame is mainly useful for indoor sports with very low light, where the high ISO performance of the large sensor makes a difference.
How important is the number of AF points?
Less than marketing suggests. A body with 100 points but excellent tracking (like the Sony A6400) beats a body with 500 points but mediocre tracking. What matters is the software's ability to track the subject across the frame, not the number of points.
Can I shoot amateur football with a €500 mirrorless?

What is the maximum certified shutter count I should accept on a used sports camera?
Sports photography puts more stress on the shutter than other genres: a day of racing can result in 1,500–2,000 shutter count. For consumer models (Sony A6000, Canon EOS R100), a shutter count under 30,000 is excellent, and up to 50,000 is still acceptable. For pro models like the OM-D E-M1 mark II, the shutter is rated for 200,000+ cycles, so even 60,000 shutter count is nothing.
Is a superzoom bridge camera worth it over a mirrorless + telephoto?
For occasional sports and a budget under 300 euros, yes, it is a practical solution. But if you have 600-700 euros to spend, a used mirrorless with a dedicated telephoto lens wins in quality, autofocus, and future versatility. The bridge is a closed system: you don't grow, you don't change lens.
