The Mark II at 200 euros remains the most sensible choice for those who simply want to learn photography: IBIS is present, no 4K, tiny body. The Mark III adds 4K 30p video and a slightly more substantial grip. Panasonic Lumix G80: the mid-range body without an AA filter

The G80 was released in 2016 with a clear positioning: above the G7, below the GH4. It is not a disguised entry-level model. It features a 16 MP sensor without an anti-aliasing filter, and the difference is visible in fine details at full screen, not in 20x30 prints.

The three factors that justify the higher price, ranging from 380 to 480 euros for the body only:

  • Declared tropicalization on the camera body and mount. Declared, not IP-certified: it handles rain and dust, not submersion.

The price difference between an E-M10 Mark III and a G80 is about 130 euros. That's the cost of a used 25mm f/1.7. If you shoot video or work in the rain, the G80 is worth it. If you travel with a pancake lens, those 130 euros are better spent on glass.

Stabilization: what the declared stops really mean

Panasonic claims 5 stops of CIPA for the G80's Dual IS 2, while Olympus rates the E-M10 Mark III's 5-axis IBIS at around 4 stops. One point marketing never mentions: stabilization compensates for camera movement, not subject movement. A child running at 1/8 second will be blurred on both cameras, even with all stops active. To freeze the subject, you need fast shutter speeds, period.

Dual IS 2 works only with the right lenses

The Dual IS 2 coordinates the sensor stabilizer with the lens stabilizer, and for this to happen, the two must communicate. This communication only exists between a Panasonic camera body and a compatible Panasonic lens. Mount an Olympus lens on the G80 and you are left with sensor stabilization only: the advantage of the 1/4 second advantage evaporates and you return to the IBIS level of the E-M10 Mark III.

If you already have a kit, you need to do the math before changing bodies:

  • Olympus stabilized kit: switching to the G80 does not give you Dual IS. You are buying weather sealing and video, not better stabilization.

Ergonomics, viewfinder, and battery in a day of work

Hold the two cameras one after the other and the 95-gram difference matters less than where those grams are distributed. The G80 has a deep grip, with a proper recess for the fingers, and a rearward center of gravity towards the body. The E-M10 Mark III has minimal front protrusion, designed to fit in a jacket pocket. They are two different philosophies: a camera meant to be held in hand all day against one that wants to disappear into a backpack.

If you have large hands, you'll understand in three minutes

With a 12-40 f/2.8 mounted, the E-M10 Mark III is front-heavy. The pinky finger sticks out from the grip, and after half an hour of continuous use, the wrist works to compensate.   • Panasonic G80 — DMW-BLC12: approx. 1200 mAh at the same 7.2 V voltage. Practically identical energy, and indeed the CIPA rating is the same for both: 330 shutter count.

A seven-year-old used battery retains 60-70 percent of its original capacity. This is not a defect of the camera body, it is chemistry: if the seller tells you it "doesn't last long," they are almost always talking about the battery, not the camera. Always budget 30-40 euros for a second original battery. The 12-euro compatibles work, but on these two bodies the display indicates the charge level roughly, and you will find yourself at zero without warning.

Autofocus and burst rate: two philosophies, same limit

Both the G80 and the E-M10 Mark III use contrast-detection autofocus. Neither has on-sensor phase-detection pixels, and this single fact explains almost everything that follows. Panasonic built DFD, Depth From Defocus, on top of this: the camera compares two slightly blurred images and calculates in which direction to move the focus element, rather than searching by trial and error. The drop between the two lines is the contrast detection limit. The system must stop focusing, evaluate contrast, and correct: it works on a subject moving laterally away, but not on a subject moving towards you. In practice, we always verify this at the counter in the same way, with someone walking towards the camera at two meters per second: after the third or fourth frame, both start to miss focus.

If you photograph sports or running children, look elsewhere

If your primary use is action, neither of these two is the right camera, and it makes no sense to spend money to find out later. You need a body with hybrid phase-detection AF that tracks the subject instead of chasing it.

  • Sony A6100 at 550 euros: 425 phase-detection points, face and eye tracking that keeps pace with a running child. It is the honest entry point for action.
  • Sony a6500 at 600 euros: same AF base but with in-body stabilization and a more robust camera body, if you are coming from Micro 4/3 and do not want to give up IBIS.

Used prices today and what to check before paying

The price gap between the two families has stabilized over the last eighteen months. An E-M10 Mark III changes hands for around 300 euros, while a G80 body rarely drops below 400. What truly changes the value of a unit is not the generation, but the condition of two components that wear out faster on micro 4/3 systems than the rest.

A G80 under €350 should be viewed with suspicion, not enthusiasm. The two typical explanations are a certified shutter count exceeding 60,000 or water damage that has affected the circuitry. Weather sealing withstands rain, not immersion, and sellers rarely disclose such incidents when reselling.

In the same price range, you'll find interesting alternatives. An Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II at €210 offers weather sealing and a better viewfinder than the E-M10, featuring 5-axis IBIS from the same generation. A Panasonic GH4 at €320 remains a serious video camera body, lacking in-body stabilization but offering codecs and controls that the G80 inherits.

The three checks we always perform on a Micro 4/3

  1. IBIS. With the camera off, gently shake it near your ear: the sensor should float freely and silently. If it clicks or feels stiff, the unit is faulty. Repair costs between 180 and 250 euros, which is uneconomical for a body worth 300.
  2. Shutter. Check the shutter count from the EXIF data, then take a burst at 1/4000. A shutter nearing end-of-life produces irregular exposures at high speeds, not strange noises.
  3. Sensor. Take a photo of a white wall at f/16, then push the contrast in post. Dust and oil spots from the shutter mechanism are typical on micro 4/3 with many cycles.

The shutter count matters less than you think

The shutters of these bodies are rated for 100,000-150,000 cycles. An E-M10 with 25,000 shutter count is at one-sixth of its useful life: that number alone does not justify a discount. How it was used matters much more. A travel camera with sand in the dials and dry seals is in worse shape than a studio camera with 60,000 shutter count and dials that still move smoothly. Always ask where it has worked, not just how much.

Get the E-M10 Mark III if

Travel photographers, you walk a lot and the camera body must disappear. With a 17mm f/1.8 mounted, it fits in the inner pocket of a jacket: 410 grams with battery and card, slim profile, no protruding deep grip. It is the right camera even if you already have Olympus or Zuiko lenses in your kit, because the IBIS works with any mounted lens, brand included.

  • Street and urban reportage: silent, discreet, electronic shutter available when needed.
  • Strict budget under 350 euros: this is the range where you find a refurbished body with warranty without giving up 5-axis IBIS.
  • Almost exclusively photographic use: if you shoot video twice a year, paying for the G80's video section makes no sense.

Get the G80 if

You shoot video regularly or work outdoors in harsh conditions. Weather sealing and the fully articulating screen make a bigger difference to your day than the spec sheet suggests. It’s also worth it if you already own Panasonic lenses with OIS, as that’s the only way the Dual IS 2 system truly works in coordination.

  • Large hands: the deep grip comfortably holds a 12-60mm lens without straining the wrist after two hours.
  • Outdoor shooting in humidity or light rain: seals are present, unlike on the E-M10.
  • Physical controls: dedicated AFS/AFC/MF lever and shutter release mode dial, which on the E-M10 Mark III are managed via buttons and menus.

Don't buy either of these if

The 4/3 sensor has a two-stop disadvantage over full frame. These are real stops, not marketing: above ISO 3200 in dark interiors the file falls apart, and to achieve extreme bokeh on a portrait you need a 25mm f/1.4 to approach what a 50mm f/1.8 on full frame does effortlessly. What we do in our workshop on a used micro 4/3

A Micro 4/3 camera body coming in as a trade-in doesn't hit the display shelf the next day. It goes through the inspection bench, and on average, we spend between two and three hours per unit. The reason is simple: on these bodies, the defect that ruins a purchase is almost never visible when looking at listing photos.

The first check we perform is on the stabilization, as it is the most expensive component to repair and the easiest to conceal. We power on the camera body, activate the IBIS, and capture a fixed pattern at 1/4 second with a 25mm lens, repeating the shutter count eight times. If more than two frames out of eight are blurry, the stabilized sensor is not functioning correctly.

Here is what a camera body goes through before it is put up for sale:

  • Certified shutter count — read from internal EXIF data, not declared by the seller, and reported in the product sheet.
  • Shutter test at all speeds — from long exposure up to 1/4000, looking for banding or inconsistent exposures between consecutive shutter counts at the same setting.
  • Sensor cleaning — wet cleaning, with a final check at f/16 against a uniform white background.

For Micro 4/3, the rule we apply is clear: a body with faulty IBIS does not go on sale. It either goes for repair and returns to the catalog only after passing the same procedure, or it is rejected and used for parts. We do not sell it at a discount with a disclaimer like "stabilization to be verified," because people buy a Micro 4/3 specifically for that feature.

Does the IBIS break? How can I tell before buying?

Yes, it is the most expensive failure on these camera bodies. With the camera off, gently shake the body near your ear: the sensor should move freely and silently. If you hear a dry metallic ticking sound or the sensor is completely stuck, the unit is faulty. The repair costs between 180 and 250 euros, which is almost always uneconomical on an E-M10 Mark II.

Is a new E-M10 Mark IV from the catalog better than a used G80?
