I have seen DSLRs fail at 60,000 shutter counts and others exceed 250,000 without a hitch. The stated lifespan is a useful reference, not a deadline written on the shutter.
Why the shutter count matters less on mirrorless cameras
This is where everything changes. Many mirrorless cameras use an electronic shutter, which reads the sensor without moving any curtains. No moving mechanical parts means no shutter wear. On these bodies, the shutter count becomes almost irrelevant.

If you buy used and want a reliable data point without dedicated software, Nikon is the brand that makes your life easier. The shutter count is embedded in the EXIF of every file, in plain text. No need to disassemble anything, no need for a hidden service menu: just take a photo and wait thirty seconds.

The procedure is straightforward and works on both DSLRs and Z mirrorless cameras. Take any photo, even with the cap on, and read the number written in the metadata. Three steps:

The Nikon D7200, for instance, is rated for 150,000 shutter counts: finding a used one at 40,000 means you still have the bulk of its mechanical life ahead.
When you read a listing, think like this:
- Under 30,000 shutter count on a semi-pro: practically like new, trust it and negotiate the price.
- 50,000-80,000: mature but healthy body, perfect if the price reflects it.

The number alone is not enough: a D7200 with 90,000 shutter count that has been well-maintained is worth more than one with 20,000 shutter count that has been dropped twice. Always read the data from the original RAW file, because metadata on JPEGs can be reset.
Sony: the tricky case
Sony is the manufacturer that makes your life the most complicated. On recent camera bodies, the shutter count is not displayed anywhere: neither in the menu nor in the EXIF readable with standard tools. When Sony doesn't tell you: evaluating the camera differently
On newer camera bodies, the shutter count is locked and, to be honest, it is sometimes not reliably retrievable. A Sony A6400 at 650 euros is a case in point: an excellent camera, but the shutter count cannot be read using standard methods. When this happens, stop chasing the number and look at everything else.
What to check when the shutter count is missing:
- Plastics and rubber: wear on the grip and door hinges tells more than a thousand certified shutter counts.
- Sensor: inspection with raking light for dust, scratches, and residues from aggressive cleaning.
- Shutter: regular sound, no hesitation or double shutter actuation at various speeds.

Fujifilm: the hidden service menu
Fujifilm rarely writes the shutter count in the EXIF files, and you won't find it in the user menu. However, many bodies in the X series — including the X-T2 — hide a service screen that displays the exact count. All you need is a key combination at startup; no cables or third-party software required.
The power-on key combination
The procedure is mechanical and must be performed with the camera powered off. On the X-T2 and most of the X-T series, it works as follows:
- Turn the camera completely off.
- Hold down DISP/BACK and the down arrow button on the selector simultaneously.
- Without releasing, move the power lever to ON.
- A diagnostic screen with the counters will appear: read the number and turn the camera off.
One warning, but it counts double: that screen is a factory technical menu. Limit yourself to reading the shutter count. Do not confirm, do not navigate between items, do not reset anything. Some parameters in there regulate the calibration of the camera body, and they do not have a convenient "undo" like the normal menu.

The shutter count is only half the story. The other half is how the camera has lived. A body with 80,000 certified shutter counts that has been well-maintained beats, without a doubt, one with 20,000 that has been mistreated. It matters just as much, sometimes even more:
- Storage: a camera stored in a damp bag for years accumulates mold on optical elements and corrosion on contacts.
- Humidity and temperature fluctuations: internal condensation that damages circuits and shutter lubricants.
- Dust on the sensor: not severe wear, but reveals how little care the camera received.
