Used camera gear: condition grading

When we value your used gear we start from the model and the declared condition. Here you can see how we grade the cosmetic state and which accessories count towards the valuation, so you can choose the right level and receive an offer that is as accurate as possible.

The grade combines two things: the cosmetic state and, on camera bodies, the shutter count. Every item is fully working, checked and serviced in our lab, and covered by a 2-year warranty — whatever the cosmetic level. The percentage shows how close the look is to new.

The five condition levels

Like new · cosmetics 97-100%

Like it just came out of the box: no signs of use, even up close. Usually complete with box and original accessories. Perfectly working.

Excellent · cosmetics 90-96%

Minimal traces of use, visible only on close inspection. No defect affecting use. Full functionality.

Minor signs of use · cosmetics 80-89%

Some visible cosmetic marks — micro-scratches, light traces on the body or the ring — but no functional defects. Everything works correctly.

Visible signs of use · cosmetics 70-79%

Clear signs of use: scratches, brassing on the edges, wear on the rubber or the paint. Cosmetically well-loved but fully working.

Heavily worn · cosmetics below 70%

Wear all over the body: worn paint, brassing, marked rubber. It works and carries the same warranty as the others, but we say how it looks up front and it shows in the price.

The shutter count, on camera bodies

On a camera the shutter is a wearing part: two bodies that look identical can be worth very different amounts if one has 8,000 actuations and the other 180,000. That is why the shutter count contributes to the grade alongside the looks, and the lower of the two levels applies: a flawless body with 120,000 actuations cannot be “Like new”.

  • Like new · up to 10,000 actuations
  • Excellent · up to 50,000 actuations
  • Minor signs of use · up to 100,000 actuations
  • Clear signs of use · over 100,000 actuations

You can read the number in the camera menu or from the data of a recent shot: if you do not know it, just leave the field empty and we will check it in our lab. The counts read on the bodies we have sold, by band, brand and model, are on the page how many shutter actuations do used cameras have: our data. On lenses, flashes and accessories the grade stays cosmetic only.

Accessories included in the valuation

The valuation takes into account the original accessories supplied with the product. Having them complete keeps the offer at its highest; if they are missing, the offer may be lower.

Camera body

Charger, battery, strap and USB cable — all original.

Lens

Caps and original accessories. If the manufacturer sells the lens together with the hood, that should be included too.

✓ Do you also have the original box, the manuals or other standard accessories? They are very welcome and increase the offer. Mention them in the notes of the valuation form.
