For Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube up to 1080p, clean Full HD at 100 Mbps is indistinguishable from downscaled 4K for the average viewer. 4K is necessary if you need to reframe in post, if a client requires it by contract, or if you are archiving material you will reuse for years. On bodies with cropped and rolling shutter 4K, such as the Canon EOS RP and EOS R, 1080p is often the technically superior choice.

Does overheating damage the camera?

No. Thermal shutdown is a safety feature: the camera stops before reaching damaging temperatures. The issue is operational, not a reliability problem — you lose the recording mid-take. It can be managed by opening the articulating screen, powering off between takes, and keeping the environment below 25 degrees. A camera body that shuts down due to heat is not a defective body to be returned.

Full frame or APS-C: which is better for video?

APS-C, in many cases. Full frame provides more pronounced bokeh and better low-light performance, but requires more expensive and bulky lenses, and the extremely shallow depth of field makes autofocus less forgiving. For talking-head content, tutorials, and social media, a Canon EOS R50 V or a Sony a6500 work better than a more expensive full frame. Sensor format is an aesthetic and logistical choice, not a quality scale.

Can I use my DSLR lenses on a used mirrorless camera for video?

Yes, with an adapter, but with caveats. The native Canon EF-EOS R and Sony LA-EA adapters maintain autofocus, which, however, is slower and noisier in video compared to native lenses. Stabilized EF lenses function normally. If you plan to do a lot of manual focus work, the adapter is a sensible, cost-effective solution; if you rely on continuous AF, it is better to invest in a native lens.

How much budget should I allocate for audio?

Between 20% and 30% of the total. Out of a total of 900 euros, allocating 650 to the camera body and 250 to the microphone and mount is a realistic breakdown. A used lavalier wireless microphone improves the perceived result more than any upgrade in the camera body's tier. First, check that the camera has a 3.5 mm mic input: the Sony A6000, for example, does not.
