The native sensitivity reaches 102,400 ISO. The extended settings Hi1-Hi5 go up to 3,280,000, a number designed for brochures. At those values, the file loses detail and color, and you wouldn't use it even for a surveillance image.
- Print: up to 12,800 ISO without worries, 25,600 with good noise reduction.
- Web and agencies: 51,200 ISO remains deliverable, especially if you expose correctly.

On paper, the D5 records in 4K UHD. In practice, every clip stops at 3 minutes and the framing suffers a crop of approximately 1.5x. Your 24-70mm therefore becomes a 36-105mm equivalent, and the wide-angle disappears.
Full HD is more usable, but the rest doesn't help. In live view, autofocus relies on contrast detection, which is slow and uncertain compared to any recent mirrorless. The D5 is not a video camera, and it should not be purchased with the mindset of "well, it also does video."
1.415 grams and no integrated Wi-Fi
The XQD version weighs approximately 1,415 grams with battery and two cards, lens excluded. With a 70-200mm f/2.8, you exceed 2.8 kilograms. On a match day with a monopod, it’s no problem. On a week-long hiking trip, it becomes one.
Even the connectivity is that of a body designed for the stage:
- No built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so no SnapBridge and no fast transfer to your smartphone.
- Ethernet port integrated, useful only if you work connected to a network in a print room.
- WT-6 transmitter for wireless: a separate accessory, bulky and today difficult to find used.
For a photojournalist, these limitations were irrelevant in 2016. For hobbyists who want to share their photos the same evening, they are a daily nuisance. Weigh them against the price.
XQD version or CompactFlash version: which to choose

The issue lies upstream. The XQD format has been superseded by CFexpress Type B, and the supply of new cards has shrunk significantly. A 64 GB XQD card often costs twice as much as a CompactFlash card of the same capacity. Before buying the D5, check the price of the cards you need and include it in your budget. Do not assume that a CFexpress card will work: before spending, check the Nikon compatibility list for the D5 and the firmware version of the camera body you are considering.
The XQD version makes sense especially for those coming from a D500 or a D850, which already have an XQD slot, and who already have the cards in their bag.
CompactFlash: affordable, but watch out for the pins
If you already own a D3S, a D700, or a D810, you probably have a drawer full of CompactFlash cards. With the CF version, you can reuse all of them without spending a dime. 64 GB UDMA 7 cards are still available for under 60 euros, and a reader costs very little. For those who take short bursts, the speed difference is barely noticeable.
The weak point is the slot. Inside, there are 50 thin pins. It only takes inserting a card at an angle with a bit of haste, perhaps on the field, to bend one. Sometimes the camera no longer reads the card. Other times, it reads intermittently and throws write errors right during the burst. In the worst cases, the bent pin also damages the card.
On a professional camera body that has been in use for years, this type of damage is often visible. That is why it should be checked before purchase:
- inspect the slot with a flashlight: the pins must all be aligned and straight;
- insert your own card, format it, and take a full burst;
- repeat the test on both slots, not just the first one.

A shutter replaced at an authorized service center, with invoice, resets the wear on the most stressed component. On a camera body with 350,000 shutter count, this is a genuine asset. The issue is that the counter read from the EXIF data is located on the motherboard, not in the shutter. Usually, after replacement, it continues counting from where it left off.
To verify this, ask for the invoice: it must state the date and, preferably, the shutter count at the time of the service. Then take a shot, read the counter, and subtract. If the count is low but the camera body is heavily worn, the motherboard may have been replaced. Without documentation, that number is worthless.
Beyond the number: signs of intensive use
The shutter count tells you how many times the camera has been used, not how it was treated. Before buying, check these points:
- Grip rubber: if it peels off or looks shiny, the camera has spent years in hand under sun and rain.
- AF joystick: it must move the focus point in all directions at the first touch, both horizontally and on the vertical grip.
- Door covers: if they are loose or do not close properly, the weather sealing is already compromised.

D5 vs D6: Is the price difference worth it?
The D6 features 105 AF points, all cross-type and all selectable, a burst rate of 14 fps, and integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. On the D5, in addition to the Ethernet port, transmitting photos wirelessly requires the optional WT-6 transmitter. The megapixel count remains the same. In practice, the D6 tracks small subjects better in the peripheral areas of the frame. However, on the sidelines, the extra 2 fps makes little difference. If you work for an agency and upload photos during the match, the D6 pays for itself. In other cases, the price difference buys you a 300mm f/2.8.
D5 vs D500: same autofocus, half the price
The D500 features the same 153-point AF module and shoots at 10 fps. On the APS-C sensor, the points cover almost the entire width of the frame. The 1.5x crop factor turns a 500mm lens into a field of view equivalent to 750mm, which is a concrete advantage for wildlife photography. What you lose compared to the D5:
- High ISO: about one stop more noise, as the sensor is smaller.
- Build: no integrated vertical grip and a less robust body in the rain.

D5 vs D850 and D810: Speed vs Resolution

Amateur sports with a budget under 300 euros

- Burst at 12 fps until buffer full: we hold down the shutter button until the camera slows down. Then we check that the cadence is regular and that the write to the card finishes without errors. A tired shutter is felt before it is seen in the files.
- AF-C with 3D-tracking: we test tracking on a moving subject with a fast lens. We check that the AF point follows the subject and that the sequence has no out-of-focus frames without reason.
- AF fine tuning: we use a test target at a fixed distance. If there is systematic front or back focus, we correct it and note it down. This way, the buyer knows where they are starting from.
- Card slots: on the CompactFlash version, the most frequent defect is bent pins from a card inserted crookedly. On XQD, we check contacts and the door. In both cases, we run multiple write and read cycles.
- Battery contacts: the EN-EL18a compartment in the vertical grip can oxidize, especially if the body has worked in the rain. Oxide on the contacts means random shutdowns in the middle of a shoot.
